- info : Step-by-step run through of how a Joule Thief circuit works. Includes how all the parts, the 1.5 volt AA battery, the resistor, the transistor and the ferrite core with its two coils of wire work together to build up energy in a magnetic field which then collapses to produce enough voltage and current to light an LED (Light Emitting Diode.) This includes explanations of the feedback that rapidly opens the transistor between base and emitter to open up the emitter to collector too. And also the feedback that slams the transistor shut again. - Chris Carter : Great Video! Excellent explanation of electronic theory and explanation of how this circuit operates!
- Alvin Robinson : Wow. This video explains it perfectly! Thanks for that nice explanation. Also the transistor visual is great!
- cableaddict : You should probably start videos like this by explaining what the point is. What is the purpose of this device? I watched the whole thing and have no idea.
- James stranger : I would like to try using something like this to light a room using a 5v 200 ma power source. using LEDs. do you think its possible ? what about two rooms? or 5 rooms but with 12v and like maybe 2 thief's? I know there's no free lunches. but would it be possible to some how to get two synchronized so one is on wile the other is off. charging a pair of caps. to be storage for the outputs. and like run Jt's off the caps. to run LED's? that way it would be similar to a lighted keyboard. lots of LEDs using the power of only one led. because they are not actually on at the same instant. just a thought. could it work that way? great video. thanks
- Arunava Datta : excellent!
- ste h : Why doesn't the inductor just stay at saturation and keep everything flowing the way it is in DC? Why does the field collapse? Is it due to (maybe) the currents lagging each other. If the red achieved it's steady state first, then the green would still be coming up to it's steady state, and even though that opposing magnetic field from the green is nowhere near as strong, it's still growing in it's direction, which is opposite to the steady state of the red, causing a now negative rate of change in the magnetic field from the point of view of the red wire...? But wouldn't the red current lag the green current since the green is needed at the base to start the red off in the first place and the green has a lower phase angle due to have more resistance. Meaning that the green would go steady state first while the red continues increasing? Thereby never actually seeing a negative rate of change the magnetic field from the point of view of the red which dominates? The steady state equations for self-inductors says having a smaller resistance will increase the time to steady state, but a smaller inductance will also increase it, and the presence of the green would lower the inductance that the red feels...?
- Ashley Mathias : What are its applications in daily life??
- fidel catsro : its the basis of a kapanadze coil, it needs to be taken seriously and it.will deliver when you upsize it..
- foureyedchick : Isn't this overkill? We are pumping in 1.5 V to get 1.85 V. That's only 0.35 volt !!!
- srihari vemeshetti : the circuit in video is wrong
- Bob Mellor : Great explanation, thank you
- Mikael Ji Skov Kristensen : I have build one. Why i get more than 1000 v output.
- TheNoBSZone : Crystal clear. Thanks!
- AwFro : thank you
- Truth Seeker : So, what's the frequency of this switching phenomenon ???
- Mike l : Good presentation though im still not sure how it works :P... mabbe a 2nd round will do the job.
- arkilus : How long would last a normal 1.5v battery in a common led?
- Diwakar Dey : can i have your email address?
- Passed High School Physics : Nice
- john paolo : why npn transistor because your explain is wrong
- john paolo : what type of transistor do you use
- Thomas Savage : Here is one way to find some cheap used parts. I hope you can use it. https://youtu.be/vH3wdtf4e7E
- Dark Humor : My brain hurts T~T
- Grey Monkey : Simply beautiful and very nicely done.
- Audioholic 01 : Question - If you wanted to make the most efficient joule thief, is there a size of transistor, resistor and transformer that would be the best combination or does it matter? I don't mean the current output in the sense of a current limiting resistor to make the battery last longer, I just mean the overall efficiency of the entire circuit.
- Tasty Fish : When there's no more increase in magnetics flux in the base windings and the base current is at its peak and can't increase anymore , the transistor switches off . How ? What makes the base current to stop or lower it's biasing voltage abruptly ? What black magic is involved? . I thought inductors /coils in a dc circuit acts as a zero ohms resistor with zero volts across it but maximum stable current continues to flows once the storing /charging period has stopped ? .
- Artjoms Pugacovs : Very bad tutorial. And transistor is huge word. Are you using fet?or mosfet?or bipolar transistor or any other of almost 100 different transistors?
- Kennynva T. : I have taken a magnet of any kind and moved it around the coil and it will increase the brightness of the led...
